One thing is for certain when having a baby — you are going to need a ton of diapers! But, how do you know which diaper is best for your child when there are so many options out there? Let me help narrow it down for you.

When I was pregnant, I spent hours researching diaper brands. I read countless reviews, watched YouTube videos, and spoke to several seasoned mamas. I knew I wanted to use a non-toxic, clean disposable diaper for Grace, but I had no idea which brand was the best. And, of course, every mama wants the best for their baby!

So, why does a clean diaper matter? Since diapers are on baby’s skin almost 24-7, it is important that they be made of non-toxic, hypoallergenic materials. Unfortunately, many mainstream diapers currently on the market contain toxic chemicals, fragrances, and lotions that have been linked to allergic reactions, asthma, diaper rash, hormonal problems, and more.

For me, these are the most important elements of a natural, non-toxic diaper:

  • NO dyes

  • NO chlorine bleaching

  • NO fragrance

  • NO lotion

  • NO heavy metals

  • NO VOCs

  • NO Latex

  • NO parabens

  • NO phthalates

I narrowed down the options to four brands that matched these criteria, offered both diapers & wipes, and had good reviews online — Dyper, Offspring, Abby & Finn, and Coterie. While testing, I felt a bit like Goldilocks — nothing was “just right.” Each brand had their pluses, but also several negatives that left me unsatisfied — until I found Coterie (scroll to the bottom of this post for a coupon code!)

Why Coterie?

Let’s start with the diapers. As soon as I opened the package, it was obvious to me that Coterie diapers are extremely well-made. They are unbelievably soft, not bulky or stiff, and true to size. They fit Grace beautifully and are easy to put on.

It may seem standard for a diaper to go on easily, but I learned quickly in my early days of motherhood that it is not. Long story short, I sent several panicked messages to Dyper’s customer service begging them to help me figure out how to fasten their diaper properly. Lol (laughing now, not then)!

Coterie diapers are not only free from all of the nasty stuff I wanted to avoid, but they are also high-performing and extremely absorbent. I am able to leave Grace’s diapers on overnight now without any worry of leaking or a blowout. Yes, in the morning her diaper is very full, but all of the wetness is absorbed into the diaper’s core —made of sodium polyacrylate (SAP) and Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) wood pulp from sustainably managed forests. Full Coterie diapers do not feel wet and soggy like some others I tried, which I love because it keep Grace dry, comfortable, and irritation free.

These diapers only come in minimalist-friendly white — which I personally prefer over prints! While patterns are cute, they often show through lighter color outfits and also typically contain harmful dyes. Coterie diapers also have a wetness indicator, which I find super helpful and missed terribly when trying out other brands like Abby & Finn and Offspring. If your wondering about Dyper brand, yes it also has a wetness indicator and comes only in white. But, I was not a fan of Dyper’s bulky, unpredictable fit and stiff, lumpy core that required smoothing and stretching out each time (not fun when baby is wiggling on the changing table!).

In terms of cost, you may look at the price per diaper amount and think Coterie is more expensive than store-bought brands. Yes, the price per diaper may be higher, but I’ve found that I use fewer Coterie diapers than with cheaper brands because of the higher quality construction. In the course of a year, the cost is basically even.

Coterie also offers 100% plant-based fiber wipes made from chlorine free Japanese cotton and eco-friendly viscose from sustainably managed forests. These premium wipes contain purified water and skin-protecting, hypoallergenic lotion that safely cleans and moisturizes baby’s skin.

Admittedly, I was not looking to switch wipe brands. I purchased Water Wipes right away, and while I tried out other natural brands here and there via samples, I was not impressed by the ingredients nor the effectiveness and feel. Then I received Coterie wipes and my mind was completely changed!

These wipes are so much better than anything I have ever tried before. Why? Firstly, they are 20% larger and so much thicker than the average baby wipe. Something I truly appreciate when Grace has one of her daily poo-poo blowouts! In addition, the wipes are amazingly soft and glide so smoothly over baby’s skin. I’ve noticed that Grace’s bum is less irritated, and she requires less diaper cream since switching to Coterie. Another perk? These wipes dispense just one at a time and are easy for mom to grab with one hand.

Just like the diapers, I end up using fewer wipes per diaper change, so any added cost evens out due to the better quality product!

Take it from me, as a mom who has tested out and researched several natural diaper & wipe brands, Coterie is the clear winner! If you’d like to try them out for 15% OFF your first subscription order, use discount code MOTIONMELISSA. I know you and your babe will love them too!
